SUITS OF KABUKICHŌ
…caught between duty and escape.
Kabukichō, the glowing heart of Tokyo’s nightlife, serves as more than just a backdrop—in this title I use it as a symbol of Japan’s unique after-hours culture. This street photography series about the Suits explores not just this district, but the broader ritual of Japanese businessmen who work tirelessly for major corporations by day and immerse themselves in the city’s nightlife by night.
These images capture the contrast between discipline and excess: men in perfectly tailored suits, drinking, laughing, and stumbling through the narrow alleys of Tokyos nightlife – caught between duty and escape. The blinding neon lights reflect on rain-soaked streets, while dark bars and glowing izakayas reveal moments of exhaustion and euphoria. This collection of images give a glimpse on the fascinating duality of Japanese work culture – balancing hard labor with extravagant nights.
